Located on the south banks of river Yamuna is a mausoleum of ivory-white marble known as the Taj Mahal, which means the crown of palaces. Shah Jahan (1628-1658), the Mughal emperor, commissioned it in the year 1632. It is the tomb of Shah Jahan’s loving wife Mumtaz Mahal and himself. The place is bounded by gardens from three sides by a crenelated wall, the tomb is about 42-acres (17-hectare) it's the centerpiece and the complex also includes a mosque and a guest house. It was designed by the architect named Ustad Ahmad Lahauri.
